Het ongeprepareerde doek zorgt er vervolgens voor dat de sterk verdunde verflaag diep in het linnen dringt. Deze werkwijze is sterk verwant met het aquarelleren op papier, een techniek die erg populair was bij 19e eeuwse schilders uit de Romantiek. Het verwondert dan ook niet dat de kunstenaar de indrukwekkende aquarellen van onder meer William Turner als belangrijke inspiratiebron vernoemt.
