The complex interaction between different graphic traditions – corporate logo design, the clear line giving a glad-eye wink to comics (Belgian!) and the folkloric arts \u0026amp; crafts idiom – also provides the framework for the specially conceived façade painting to mark the re-opening of a drastically refurbished M HKA in 2009. This monumental drawing is comprised of ten identical figures, refined to a pure play of lines, looking skywards; for six of these figures, indifferent as to gender, the face’s profile melds with a near-perfect yellow sphere (David loves hybrids) that seems to evoke both sun and moon. In other words, this work fits perfectly within David’s oeuvre, in which references to rather ironic, nostalgia-veiled allusions of ‘alternative’ symbolism (suns, music, harlequins, dance) abound. But whether this work worships the newly risen sun above the M HKA or not, is of secondary importance: first and foremost, Enrico David conceived a tight, minimalist package for the museum in the best tradition of Antwerp understatement. His mural girdles the three sides of the building, and the musical and/or choreographical undertone of this ambitious new work literally lends stature to the clear, straightforward image that the new M HKA wishes to convey.\u003c/p\u003e"},{"locale":"nl","short_description":"","description":"\u003cp\u003eTekenen doet doorgaans dienst als basis of vertrekpunt Enrico David. De monumentale titelloze tekening bestaat uit tien identieke, tot een uitgepuurd lijnenspel herleide figuren die de blik ten hemel slaan; van zes van die figuren, die even veel vrouwelijke als mannelijke trekken hebben, valt het gezichtsprofiel samen met een ei zo na perfecte gele bol die (David houdt van hybriden) zowel zon als maan lijkt te evoceren. Het werkt past met andere woorden perfect binnen Davids oeuvre, waarin wel vaker, en al dan niet ironisch, op met nostalgie omfloerste ‘alternatieve’ symboliek (zonnen, muziek, harlekijns, dans) wordt gealludeerd. Maar of het nu een aanbidding van een boven het nieuwe M HKA rijzende zon betreft of niet, is slechts van secundair belang: in eerste instantie ontwierp Enrico David voor het museum een strak, minimalistisch pak in de beste traditie van Antwerps understatement. Zijn ‘mural’ omgordt de drie zijden van het gebouw, en de muzikale en/of choreografische ondertoon van dit ambitieuze nieuwe werk (dat in zekere zin in dialoog treedt met een lokale architecturale traditie die de façade als uithangbord voor programmatische inhouden beschouwt) geeft zo letterlijk mee gestalte aan het heldere, rechtlijnige beeld dat het nieuwe M HKA wil uitdragen.\u003c/p\u003e"},{"locale":"fr","short_description":"","description":"\u003cp\u003ePour Enrico David, les dessins font habituellement fonction de base ou de point de départ. En d’autres termes, l’œuvre cadre parfaitement dans l’œuvre de David, dans lequel il fait souvent allusion, éventuellement d’une manière ironique, à une symbolique ‘alternative’ voilée de nostalgie (des soleils, de la musique, des arlequins, de la danse).
