As STATE needs to be directed by the human it lives off, the Bearer of STATE is by default the absolute ruler; but for decades, no one has been able to bear STATE and a ruthless President has taken over. The book starts when one of the nation’s most wanted freedom fighters, S., becomes Bearer of STATE. She sets out to install democracy, but she and the people surrounding her have not counted on the infiltration of STATE into the Bearer’s body, her self, her being. S. has to come to grips with STATE and she has to focus to locate and disable her opponents. She is catapulted from action scenes into visions of white, which capture the different states of self that the power and information structures of STATE induce. Before long, these visions evolve from incidences into a continuum, marking her transition into an object: the object of veneration for some, an object of hate for others. The existence of a Bearer of STATE inhibits any process of democratization, so this leaves STATE with only one choice. But before S. can accomplish this end, there are more metamorphoses she has to undergo. During 2012, \u003ci\u003eS./The Bearer of STATE\u003c/i\u003e\u0026nbsp;has been gradually published like an online feuilleton (serially written novel), which will be finalized into an e-book.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRelation of the novel to the artist’s practice\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn Karin Arink’s (textual and visual) works, she visualizes metamorphoses of our states of self: the interactions between physical experience \u0026amp; corporeality on one hand, and ideas on how you should manifest yourself -through body, garment, language and signs- on the other. In her sculptural works, the shape and material evoke the metamorphosis, or (in her photo works) highlight the exterior as a façade. In her animations, the shifting from body shape to sign and back again is visible. In her novel, \u003ci\u003eS./The Bearer of STATE\u003c/i\u003e, she describes the changes that happen inside a person who is transposed to a different social status, and who then turns into a receptacle of information and of power, before turning into an object. Fragments of the novel’s text, in particular of the ‘visions of white’, were translated into Dutch and presented as spoken text in her installation \u003ci\u003eManifold Mumbag and Fragments of the White Visions\u003c/i\u003e\u0026nbsp;(De Pont, Tilburg, 2006). Het boek vangt aan wanneer een van de meest gezochte vrijheidsstrijders van het land, S., Drager van STAAT wordt. Ze wil democratie installeren, maar zij en de mensen rondom haar hebben geen rekening gehouden met de infiltratie van STATE op het lichaam van de Drager, op haar zelf, haar wezen. S. moet in het reine komen met STATE en moet zich concentreren om haar tegenstanders te onderscheiden en onschadelijk te maken. Van actiescènes wordt ze gekatapulteerd in visioenen van wit, impressies van de verschillende toestanden van zijn die de macht en informatiestructuren van STATE uitlokken. Die visioenen evolueren van zeldzame voorvallen tot een continuüm, een aanduiding van hoe zij een voorwerp wordt: voorwerp van verering voor sommigen, voorwerp van haat voor anderen. Het bestaan van een Drager van STAAT verhindert het democratiseringsproces, en dus rest er STAAT slechts één oplossing. Maar alvorens S. dat kan volbrengen, moet ze nog meer metamorfoses ondergaan… In 2012 werd *S./The Bearer of STATE* gaandeweg gepubliceerd als een online feuilleton (een roman in afleveringen), om uiteindelijk als een e-book te landen. \u003cstrong\u003eVerhouding van de roman tot de praktijk van de kunstenaar\u003c/strong\u003e In tekstueel en visueel werk toont Karin Arink de metamorfoses van onze ‘toestanden van zelf’: de interacties tussen fysieke ervaring en lichamelijkheid aan de ene kant, en ideeën over hoe je jezelf moet uitdrukken – met lichaam, kledij, taal en tekens - aan de andere kant. In haar sculpturen roepen vorm en materiaal de metamorfose op, of, zoals in haar fotografie, ze tonen de buitenkant als een façade. In haar animaties wordt zichtbaar hoe lichaamsvorm verschuift naar teken en weer terug.
