The narrator tells a story that happened to him time ago, when he was in his twenties, in which he goes through a series of experiences that he, at that moment, was not in conditions to understand. It is only in retrospective that he is able to give account of it. In Illusion, characters are not aware of their being constantly changing and redefining in relation to their environment and the others. This alienating nature goes to an extreme with the protagonist, who is always in the need of a model to imitate. The problem is that, the closer he is of that model, the more he enters in competition with it in order to attain the object of their desires.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRelation of the novel to the artist\u0026rsquo;s practice\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTo make \u003cem\u003eIllusion\u003c/em\u003e, Maroto departed from preexisting narrative works of his own production, such as sound pieces, video animations, leporellos, installations... He then removed their sound and visual components, so that eventually it resulted in a collection of loose narrative texts, which he took as the basic materials to write \u003cem\u003eIllusion\u003c/em\u003e. All these pieces were integrated wihtin the text of \u003cem\u003eIllusion\u003c/em\u003e, which became in this way a sort of patchwork of different, unconnected art pieces whose seams might not be obvious at first sight. Conversely, as the writing of \u003cem\u003eIllusion \u003c/em\u003eprogressed, it gave way to new, autonomous projects. The reader of \u003cem\u003eIllusion \u003c/em\u003ehas two options. She can read it as a regular novel, with a storyline, characters, and so on. But there is also the option to get an expanded reading experience, by relating each passage to each particular work from where it comes. Those works are, in turn, also made of fragments of images and sounds, which refer to other pictures, texts and so on. \u003cem\u003eIllusion \u003c/em\u003ethus functions as the axis of a constellation of narrative works that ultimately refer their meaning to it. The project does not end with the publication of the book. A new dimension begins with it, because the meaning of a novel is to be read. It only exists in the here and now when someone is reading it. Het is pas achteraf dat hij er een relaas van kan maken. De personages in *Illusion* zijn zich niet bewust van de voortdurende veranderende aard van zichzelf en de relatie met hun omgeving en de anderen. Die bevreemdende aard toont zich vooral bij het hoofdpersonage, dat altijd op zoek is naar een model om te imiteren. Het probleem is dat hoe dichter hij dat model nadert, hoe meer hij ermee in competitie treedt om het doel van hun verlangens te bereiken.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eVerhouding van de roman tot de praktijk van de kunstenaar\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eVoor het maken van\u0026nbsp;\u003cem\u003eIllusion \u003c/em\u003e vertrok Maroto van enkele eigen bestaande verhalende werken, zoals geluidsproducties, video-animaties, leporello\u0026rsquo;s, installaties, enzovoort. Vervolgens haalde hij hun geluid en hun visuele componenten weg, zodat hij overbleef met een verzameling losse verhalende teksten. Met die basismaterialen schreef hij \u003cem\u003eIllusion\u003c/em\u003e. Al die werken werden ge\u0026iuml;ntegreerd in de tekst, dat zo een soort van lappendeken werd van verschillende, niet met elkaar verbonden kunstwerken, met naden die op het eerste zich niet zo duidelijk zijn. Omgekeerd bracht het schrijven van op zich nieuwe, autonome projecten voort. De lezer van \u003cem\u003eIllusion \u003c/em\u003e heeft twee opties. Hij of zij kan het lezen als een gewone roman, met een plot, personages en zo meer. Maar er is ook de optie van de verhoogde leeservaring, door elke passage te verbinden met elk specifiek werk waar die vandaan komt. Die werken zijn, op hun beurt, gemaakt van fragmenten van beelden en geluiden, die verwijzen naar andere beelden, teksten en zo verder. \u003cem\u003eIllusion \u003c/em\u003e functioneert als de as van een constellatie aan verhalende werken die er hun mening aan ontlenen. De publicatie van het boek betekent niet het einde van het project. Er begint dan net een nieuwe dimensie, want de betekenis van een roman ligt in het lezen ervan. De betekenis bestaat alleen in het hier en nu wanneer iemand ze leest.
