Turrell makes light visible by lending it a spatial, near tangible quality.\u0026nbsp;James Turrell started creating his Skyspaces in the mid-1970s. He has since constructed these at various points around the globe, including France, Italy, Ireland, Israel, the U.S.A. and the Netherlands.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe M HKA rooftop terrace has its own \u003ci\u003eSkyspace\u003c/i\u003e: a cube-shaped space with a single door opening and a square hole in the ceiling. Bench seats are provided along the walls. During the day one can peer through the small cutout and admire the sky, seemingly in constant motion. At dusk, the blue light grows progressively deeper, clouds and passing airplanes become invisible and the first stars emerge. Until the opening seems filled with a velvety jet-black cloth, like a dark square that appears to be painted on the ceiling. Depth perception fades away, the black seems impenetrable while the sky outside the cube – visible through the door opening – follows its normal course from day to night. Langs de muren zijn zitbanken aangebracht, waarop je kan plaatsnemen. Overdag kan je door de opening in het plafond een stukje uitgesneden lucht bewonderen, die altijd in beweging lijkt. Bij zonsondergang kan je meemaken hoe de blauwe lucht steeds dieper blauw wordt, hoe wolken en passerende vliegtuigen onzichtbaar worden en de eerste sterren verschijnen tot de opening gevuld lijkt met een fluwelige gitzwarte lap alsof er een mat zwart vierkant op het plafond is geschilderd. Het dieptezicht valt weg en het zwart lijkt ondoordringbaar, terwijl de hemel buiten de kubus – zichtbaar door de deuropening – de gekende evolutie van dag naar nacht doormaakt. Le long des murs sont fixées des banquettes sur lesquelles le spectateur peut prendre place. En journée, la découpe dans le plafond permet de contempler une partie du ciel, qui paraît toujours en mouvement. À la tombée du jour, on peut voir le bleu du ciel devenir de plus en plus profond, les nuages et les traces de condensation d’avions s’estomper, et apparaître les premières étoiles, jusqu’à ce que l’ouverture paraisse se couvrir d’un voile velouté, noir comme le jais. Le carré au plafond semble ensuite recouvert d’une peinture noire et matte. La perception stéréoscopique disparaît et l’obscurité semble impénétrable, tandis que le ciel au-delà du cube – visible à travers la porte – poursuit l’évolution du jour vers la nuit.
