Inspired by the \u003cem\u003eSalon des Refus\u0026eacute;s\u003c/em\u003e, which opened its doors on 15 May 1863 as a counterpart to the official \u003cem\u003eSalon de Paris\u003c/em\u003e, De Wolf created the installation \u003cem\u003eSalon des R\u0026eacute;fugi\u0026eacute;s, 2015\u003c/em\u003e.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cem\u003eSalon des Refus\u0026eacute;s\u003c/em\u003e displayed those artworks that had been rejected but a jury. These works were stamped with a red \u0026lsquo;R\u0026rsquo;. What should have been an exhibition that would discourage further production of aberrant art, became an even larger success than the official \u003cem\u003eSalon\u003c/em\u003e. Paris was ready to embrace a change in the arts.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eNot only was the period marked by the emergence of new themes and styles, there was also an opening to portray social inequality and the issues of the working classes in the arts. Artist Honor\u0026eacute; Daumier (mostly known for his caricatures) portrayed migrants and people who had been removed from their homes to make room for grand boulevards and new apartment buildings.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cem\u003eSalon des R\u0026eacute;fugi\u0026eacute;s, 2016\u003c/em\u003e draws from this historical context. For four weeks volunteers and ladies from the Rode Kruis refugee centres at Linkeroever and Westakkers embroidered and wove textiles. The workshop became a place for conversation, stories and an exchange of customs from their homelands. The textiles they created, led by De Wolf, are incorporated in the exhibition. Household items receive a sculptural form and refer to the packed materials that were carried as luggage during their journey. In the context of \u003cem\u003eSalon des R\u0026eacute;fugi\u0026eacute;s, 2015 \u0026ndash; 2016\u003c/em\u003e, the textures in the fabrics relate to cultural heritage. Gedurende vier weken werkten vrijwilligers en dames uit de Rode Kruis opvangcentra in Linkeroever en Westakkers aan geborduurde en geweven stoffen. In het atelier ontstonden gesprekken, verhalen en gebruiken uit de context van hun thuisland. De textielen die zij, onder leiding van De Wolf maakten, worden nu verwerkt in de tentoonstelling. Huisraad krijgt een sculpturale vorm en verwijst naar het ingepakte materiaal dat tijdens hun reis als bagage werd meegenomen.
