Who says books have to be read anyway? Some books are indeed made merely to be looked at. As such, the M HKA uses the present as a diving-board into the coming historic exhibitions, organised by ABC. Flemish painting may have found its origin in books (e.g. the Breviarium Mayer van den Berg), but Plantin-Moretus too relied on images and letters for its activities.\u003cbr\u003eBooks volatilize – into stories and memories – but they are, after all, objects. All through modernity, artists have viewed books as such. To them, books are a way of creating art, not unlike canvas or videotapes.\u003cbr\u003eSo far, the art world has been less aware of this than the artists themselves, and artists’ books barely fetch the mind-bogging prices of unique masterpieces.\u003cbr\u003eThe exhibition revolves around the Imschoot Publishers’ International collection (more than one hundred artists’ books), that is currently being picked up by the New York Moma, the Los Angeles Moca and the London Tate, but was barely given the time of day in Belgium until recently, when it was acquired by the Antwerp M HKA.\u003cbr\u003eA number of those books will be placed inside the artists’ oeuvre.\u003cbr\u003eBooks as autonomous works of art: an exhibition for browsers and strollers alike.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis exhibition is part of the programm of ABC 2004, Antwerp Book Capital 2004 and realised in collaboration with ABC 2004. Een boek dient immers niet altijd te worden gelezen, soms kan een boek enkel gemaakt zijn om te worden bekeken. Het M HKA bereidt daarmee vanuit de actualiteit de duik in het verleden voor van de historische tentoonstellingen die volgen in ABC. Niet enkel onze Vlaamse schilderkunst komt immers uit boeken voort, zoals blijkt uit het Breviarium Mayer van den Bergh, ook Plantin-Moretus was net zo goed met beelden en met letters bezig. Het boek vervluchtigt in alle richtingen, in verhalen en herinneringen, maar het blijft toch ook een ding. Kunstenaars gaan al de hele moderniteit lang op die manier met boeken om. Voor hen zijn boeken een mogelijkheid om kunst te maken, net zo goed als schildersdoek of video. Door de kunstwereld wordt hieraan minder aandacht besteed dan door de kunstenaars zelf.\u003cbr\u003eKunstenaarsboeken halen aanvankelijk meestal niet de tot de verbeelding sprekende prijzen die unieke werken wel halen. De tentoonstelling vertrekt van het internationale fonds van meer dan honderd kunstenaarsboeken dat Imschoot Uitgevers opbouwde, en dat onder meer wordt verzameld door het Moma in New York, het Moca in Los Angeles, de Tate in Londen en dat nu ook door het Antwerpse M HKA integraal werd verworven. Een aantal van deze boeken zullen telkens worden getoond binnen het oeuvre van de kunstenaars, waardoor hun plaats tussen de rest van het werk blijkt.
