Het Paleis op de Meir huisvestte vroeger het Internationaal Cultureel Centrum (ICC), opgericht in 1970 op initiatief van het Ministerie van Nederlandse Cultuur. Het ICC was de eerste publieke instelling voor hedendaagse kunst in Vlaanderen, en ontwikkelde zich onder leiding van toekomstig M HKA-directeur Flor Bex tot een dynamische ontmoetingsplek voor kunst(enaars) en publiek. Het ICC was daarmee de onmiddellijke voorloper van het M HKA. Het museum werd bij de oprichting in 1982 ook formeel de erfgenaam van het ICC, omdat het documentatiecentrum, de bibliotheek en de videotheek ervan werden opgenomen in het M HKA. Bovendien legde de ICC-tijd ook de basis voor de\u0026nbsp;M HKA-collectie.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMet \u003cem\u003eM HKA in het Paleis op de Meir\u003c/em\u003e wil het museum een band aangaan met haar historische wortels.
