They look to give access to these enigmatic items that have inspired contemporary artists to create their works. For lonelyfingers, the story that lies behind each artwork has a remarkable value. Lonelyfingers showcase multiple collections online as well as organise special interventions into collections by artists. Simultaneously they present curatorial projects at different spaces, inviting collaborations with artists from diverse backgrounds and practices. Perhaps their most ambitious being their project \u003cem\u003elonelyfingers-Konversationsst\u0026uuml;cke\u003c/em\u003e for Museum Abteiburg in M\u0026ouml;nchengladbach, which won the AICA-Germany Best Special Exhibition of 2013.\u0026nbsp;\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eAs our LODGERS, lonelyfingers are interested to collaborate with other artists to find out about\u0026nbsp;how biography shapes and informs the creative process of artists, particularly when you have arrived in a different place, whether to live or to undertake for instance a residency. It is late at night. We\u0026rsquo;ve packed our bags and all seems to be ready for an early departure. For many people, traveling is related with pleasure and holidays; for others with business, and for artists with something usually called \u003cem\u003eexperience\u003c/em\u003e. As visual artists we often connect emotionally to places, we make particular bonds with things, people, situations and surroundings, and sometimes these bonds are very hard to break. Temporary living and working environments and short encounters with people may result in an abundant artistic production or even in a permanent move to another country, and sometimes these experiences can change our work unexpectedly in a definitive way.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eToday when someone asks artists for a biography or CV, we submit without hesitation chronologically ordered lists of exhibitions, publications and awards. This is a routine, a sort of agreement that like any other format tries to simplify the reading and somehow it grants standardisation. But can this standard tell us how time spent in certain places has affected our work? Can we understand the transformative power of traveling from reading our CV?\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eSome months ago, Nav Haq and Alan Quireyns invited lonelyfingers to be part of the LODGERS residence programme. At that moment we were spending some time in Paris participating in another artist residency. It was back then that we found the book \u003cem\u003eWilfredo and Helena: My Life with Wilfredo Lam, 1939-1950\u003c/em\u003e written by Helena Ben\u0026iacute;tez. While reading this little book we realised how embedded Lam\u0026rsquo;s biography is in his works. Somehow his own syncretic nature became magnified, enlarged while traveling and living in different countries. His works are a fantastical mixture of cultural experiences ancient and modern, they are the testament of a man that travelled both voluntarily and involuntary through cultures and religions. Lam\u0026rsquo;s biography, his Cuban mixed-race family background and his long periods living abroad in countries like Spain and France made us see Wilfredo Lam\u0026rsquo;s paintings as complex maps of the world.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMaps of You\u003c/strong\u003e is the beginning of a new group of works made by ourselves and our collaborators. We are starting to \u0026lsquo;draw\u0026rsquo; our biographies in a different way; visualising the transitions and raptures in one\u0026rsquo;s work which can appear when we change work-life settings and when we are facing different cultural inspirations. Loneyfingers are thinking of \u003cem\u003edrawing\u003c/em\u003e our biographies as \u003cem\u003emaps. \u003c/em\u003eMaybe with the help of this abstract language we could get closer to a different understanding of artistic work, which states that artworks register specific points on a personal voyage.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMaps of You\u003c/strong\u003e begins with a presentation of Anne P\u0026ouml;hlmann\u0026rsquo;s and Diango Hern\u0026aacute;ndez\u0026rsquo;s new works for LODGERS. Het is laat \u0026rsquo;s avonds. We hebben onze tassen gepakt en alles lijkt klaar voor een vroeg vertrek. Voor veel mensen is reizen verbonden met plezier en vakanties, voor anderen met werk, en voor kunstenaars soms met iets wat \u003cem\u003eervaring\u003c/em\u003e wordt genoemd. Als beeldend kunstenaars zijn we vaak emotioneel met een plaats verbonden, voornamelijk aan de dingen, mensen, situaties en omgeving, en het is soms enorm moeilijk om deze band te verbreken. Tijdelijke woon- en werkomgevingen en korte ontmoetingen met mensen kunnen leiden tot een overvloedige artistieke productie of zelfs het definitieve verhuizen naar een ander land, en soms kunnen deze ervaringen ons werk onverwacht en onherroepelijk veranderen.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eAls er iemand vandaag een kunstenaar vraagt naar diens biografie of CV, geven we zonder aarzeling een chronologische lijst van tentoonstellingen, publicaties en awards. Dat is een routine, een soort overeenkomst die zoals eender welk ander format het lezen probeert te vereenvoudigen en op een bepaalde manier standaardiseert. Maar kan deze standaard ons iets vertellen over hoe het spenderen van tijd op bepaalde plaatsen ons werk heeft be\u0026iuml;nvloed? Kunnen we de transformerende kracht van reizen afleiden uit een CV?\u0026nbsp;\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eEen tijd geleden nodigde Nav Haq en Alan Quireyns lonelyfingers uit om deel uit te maken van het LODGERS-residentieprogramma. Toen waren we een tijd in Parijs om deel te nemen aan een andere kunstenaarsresidentie. Het was toen dat we het boek \u003cem\u003eWilfredo and Helena: My Life with Wilfredo Lam, 1939-1950\u003c/em\u003e, geschreven door Helena Ben\u0026iacute;tez, vonden. Tijdens het lezen van dit boekje beseften we hoe hard Lams biografie erin vervlochten zit. Op een bepaalde manier werd zijn eigen syncretische natuur uitvergroot door te reizen en in verschillende landen te leven. Zijn werken zijn een fantastische mix van culturele ervaringen \u0026ndash; evenzeer eeuwenoud als modern \u0026ndash; en zijn het testament van een man die zowel vrijwillig als verplicht langs verschillende culturen en religies reisde. Lams biografie, zijn Cubaanse familie met een diverse achtergrond en de periodes waarin hij langdurig in landen als Spanje en Frankrijk woonde, doen ons Wilfredo Lams schilderijen als complexe kaarten van de wereld zien.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMaps of You\u003c/strong\u003e is het begin van een nieuwe groep van werken dat we samen met onze medewerkers maken.
