In the 1950s, a number of European countries built a safety net of social services for their citizens. Social security, good and affordable healthcare, democratic education, public transport, and easily accessible cultural facilities all became concerns of the welfare state. This safety net of a caring, motherly state was slowly but surely unravelled in the 1980s and 1990s through the privatization of all kinds of government services. People were encouraged to put aside extra funds for their retirement and to take out additional health insurance, but many people cannot afford this. People are still longing for physical and mental well-being, as witnessed by the trend of wellness centres. These also provide welfare, albeit at a price.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eAfter more than 40 years of myth-building around the free market, the system by now has shown to be impotent and not capable of providing even the most basic social services. However, today\u0026rsquo;s governments often refuse to acknowledge this impotence, which explains the renewed interest in the commons. Citizens attempt to take back control of basic social and natural services\u0026mdash;such as neighbourly help or the distribution of water\u0026mdash;and make them common again. Sociale zekerheid, goede en betaalbare gezondheidszorg, democratisch onderwijs, openbaar vervoer en toegankelijke culturele voorzieningen werden allemaal zorgen van de verzorgingsstaat. Dit vangnet van een zorgzame, moederlijke staat werd langzaal maar zeker in de jaren 80 en 90 ontrafeld door de privatisering van allerlei overheidsdiensten. Mensen werden aangemoedigd om extra geld opzij te zetten voor hun pensioen en om een aanvullende ziektekostenverzekering af te sluiten, maar veel mensen kunnen dit niet betalen. Mensen verlangen nog steeds naar lichamelijk en geestelijk welzijn, getuige de trend van wellnesscentra. Deze bieden ook welvaart, zij het tegen een prijs.\u003cbr /\u003e\r\nNa meer dan 40 jaar van mythevorming rond de vrije markt, is het systeem inmiddels onmachtig gebleken en niet in staat om zelfs de meest elementaire sociale voorzieningen te bieden. De regeringen van vandaag weigeren echter vaak om deze impotentie te erkennen, wat de hernieuwde interesse in de commons verklaart. Burgers proberen de controle over elementaire sociale en natuurlijke diensten \u0026ndash; zoals hulp van buren of de distributie van water \u0026ndash; terug te nemen en ze weer gemeenschappelijk te maken.
