In two M HKA spaces, the exhibition \u003ci\u003eSalon de Peinture\u003c/i\u003e offers a picture of the current state of affairs, with more than fifty paintings by Belgian artists and foreign artists living and working in Belgium.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eLode Geens and Liliane Dewachter, who compiled the exhibition, do not strive for completeness.\u0026nbsp; Rather, they want to show the widest possible range and give a picture of the very diverse contemporary painterly practices existing today.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003eSalon de Peinture\u003c/i\u003e shows work by some already classic masters, such as Raoul De Keyser, Roger Raveel, Marthe W\u0026eacute;ry and Jef Verheyen; painters who are celebrated internationally, such as Luc Tuymans, Micha\u0026euml;l Borremans, Angel Vergara and Koen van den Broek; or fascinating \u003ci\u003eeinzelg\u0026auml;nger\u003c/i\u003e, mavericks who have developed a remarkable, idiosyncratic oeuvre: Fred Bervoets, Wout Vercammen, Walter Swennen and Philippe Vandenberg for example.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThere\u0026#39;s also a lot of young(er) talent on show, of which some already have a national or even international reputation, like Kati Heck, Kasper Bosmans and Ben Sledsens. Others are the proverbial \u0026#39;young and up-and-coming\u0026#39;, e.g. Sanam Khatibi, Anna Zacharoff, Tessa Perutz, or Gijs Milius. The latter are from Iran, Sweden, the United States and the Netherlands respectively, but they are working in Brussels. It is striking, incidentally, that the new names from Brussels only get noticed in Antwerp little by little, but the same goes for Antwerp artists in Brussels. In that respect, \u003ci\u003eSalon de Peinture\u003c/i\u003e offers an interesting introduction.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThere is also room for (re)discoveries: the partly abstract, partly figurative works by Ilse D\u0026#39;Hollander (1968-1997), which have received international praise in recent years, and the geometric abstract work of architect Alfons Hoppenbrouwers (1930-2001), to whose oeuvre the M HKA devotes a separate exhibition (19.01-05.05.2019).\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eIt says a lot about the current boom in Belgian painting that it would take little effort to put together a second \u003ci\u003eSalon de Peinture \u003c/i\u003ewith fifty other painters.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eIn the 1970s and 1980s, painting was declared dead several times. At the time, the climate was not particularly favourable, in the sense that painters had little or no exhibitions in galleries and museums. Minimalism, arte povera, conceptual art, early video art, happenings and performances were in full swing: in a manner of speaking, Broodthaers, Beuys and Byars were setting the tone. Painters were chased away and regarded as perverts who were fudging with their paint in a messy studio, using a totally outdated bourgeois medium. After all, hadn\u0026rsquo;t everything already been \u0026lsquo;said\u0026rsquo; in painting?\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eMoreover, the possibilities to exhibit were much more limited than they are today: S.M.A.K. and M HKA did not exist yet \u0026ndash; although there were forerunners like ICC in Antwerp and the Society for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent \u0026ndash; and the gallery circuit was much smaller than today.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eFor the sake of clarity: painters kept on painting, even though they were only just keeping their heads above water. In the meantime, it sounds almost like a quip: from 1988 onwards, Luc Tuymans not only put painting on the map again, but also gave figurative painting a new \u0026eacute;lan. He practiced a new kind of \u0026#39;\u0026#39;history painting\u0026#39;\u0026#39;, worked with the role of history and memory, and asked questions about the veracity of the (painted) image.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the so-called \u0026#39;Antwerp school\u0026#39; \u0026ndash; Luc Tuymans and contemporaries like Bert De Beul and Guy Van Bossche \u0026ndash; had produced a number of followers, afterwards, painting seems to have completely sprouted again, in such a way that much, yes almost everything is possible.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eCurrently, not a hundred but a thousand flowers flourish in painting. In these two rooms, you will see neo surrealism, fluo figuration and neo na\u0026iuml;ve art, everything from abstraction to figuration, from monochrome to geometric abstract, from pure aesthetics to \u0026#39;bath painting\u0026#39;, from social commentary to \u0026#39;Art for art\u0026#39;s sake\u0026#39;. Attention is paid to the landscape and man, to war and idyll.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eAs a source of inspiration, old masters such as Cranach, Botticelli and Van der Weyden are used, but comics and logos as well. You\u0026#39;ll see how masters such as Walter Swennen, Fred Bervoets and Raoul De Keyser leave their mark in the work of younger painters.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe compact hanging, in several rows above each other, refers to the classic 18th and 19th century \u0026#39;salons\u0026#39;: annual official exhibitions that wanted to uphold the appearance of an abundant production from young artists. Hence the title of this exhibition. But make no mistake: the hanging was not done haphazardly! There are speaking confrontations or image rhymes, works that are connected by colour or style, motif or theme. Die laatste vier zijn respectievelijk afkomstig uit Iran, Zweden, de Verenigde Staten en Nederland maar zijn werkzaam in Brussel. Het is trouwens opvallend dat de nieuwe namen vanuit Brussel slechts mondjesmaat doordringen tot in Antwerpen, maar ook het omgekeerde is waar. \u003ci\u003eSalon de Peinture\u003c/i\u003e biedt dus ook in dat opzicht een boeiende kennismaking.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eVoorts is er plaats voor (her)ontdekkingen: het deels abstract deels figuratief werk van Ilse D\u0026rsquo;Hollander (1968-1997), die de voorbije jaren internationaal lof oogst, en het geometrisch abstracte werk van architect Alfons Hoppenbrouwers (1930-2001), aan wiens oeuvre het M HKA een aparte tentoonstelling wijdt (19.01 \u0026ndash; 05.05.2019).\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eHet zegt veel over de huidige hoogconjunctuur in de Belgische schilderkunst dat het weinig moeite zou kosten om een tweede \u003ci\u003eSalon de Peinture\u003c/i\u003e samen te stellen met vijftig andere schilders.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eIn de jaren 1970 en 1980 is de schilderkunst meermaals dood verklaard. Het klimaat was toen niet bepaald gunstig in de zin dat schilders weinig of geen tentoonstellingen in galeries en musea kregen. Minimalisme, arte povera, conceptuele kunst, prille videokunst, happenings en performances waren volop in zwang: het waren bij wijze van spreken Broodthaers, Beuys en Byars die de toon aangaven. Schilders werden weggehoond en beschouwd als viezeriken die met hun verf zaten te knoeien in een rommelig atelier en een totaal voorbijgestreefd burgerlijk medium beoefenden. Alles was toch inmiddels \u0026lsquo;gezegd\u0026rsquo; in de schilderkunst?\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eBovendien waren de mogelijkheden om tentoon te stellen toen veel beperkter dan nu: S.M.A.K. en M HKA bestonden nog niet \u0026ndash; voorlopers als ICC in Antwerpen en Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst in Gent waren er wel \u0026ndash; en het galeriecircuit was veel kleiner dan vandaag.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eVoor alle duidelijkheid: schilders zijn wel de hele tijd bl\u0026iacute;jven schilderen al hielden ze slechts moeizaam het hoofd boven water. Inmiddels klinkt het bijna als een boutade: Luc Tuymans heeft vanaf 1988 niet alleen de schilderkunst weer op de kaart gezet maar bovendien de figuratieve schilderkunst een nieuw \u0026eacute;lan gegeven. Hij beoefende een nieuw soort \u0026lsquo;history painting\u0026rsquo;, werkte rond de rol van geschiedenis en geheugen, en stelde vragen over de waarheidsgetrouwheid van het (geschilderde) beeld.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eNadat die zogeheten \u0026lsquo;Antwerpse school\u0026rsquo; \u0026ndash; Luc Tuymans en generatiegenoten als Bert De Beul en Guy Van Bossche \u0026ndash; een aantal navolgers had voortgebracht, lijkt de schilderkunst zich daarna weer helemaal ontbolsterd te hebben, zodat veel, ja bijna alles mogelijk is.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eIn de schilderkunst bloeien momenteel geen honderd maar duizend bloemen. In deze twee zalen ziet u neo-surrealisme, fluo-figuratie en neo-na\u0026iuml;visme, alles van abstractie tot figuratie, van monochroom werk tot geometrisch abstract, van pure esthetiek tot \u0026lsquo;bad painting\u0026rsquo;, van sociale commentaar tot \u0026lsquo;l\u0026rsquo;art pour l\u0026rsquo;art\u0026rsquo;. Er is aandacht voor het landschap en de mens, voor oorlog en idylle.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eOude meesters zoals Cranach, Botticelli en Van der Weyden maar evengoed comics en logo\u0026rsquo;s worden gebruikt als inspiratiebron. Je ziet hoe meesters als Walter Swennen, Fred Bervoets en Raoul De Keyser hun sporen nalaten in werk van jongere schilders.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eDe dichte ophanging in verschillende rijen boven elkaar verwijst naar de klassieke 18de en 19de-eeuwse \u0026rsquo;salons\u0026rsquo;: jaarlijkse offici\u0026euml;le tentoonstellingen die een overvloedig beeld wilden schetsen van de jongste artistieke productie. Vandaar ook de titel van deze tentoonstelling. Maar laat u niet beetnemen: de ophanging is niet lukraak gebeurd. Er zitten sprekende confrontaties of beeldrijmen in, werken die verbonden zijn door kleur of stijl, motief of thema. Le climat de l\u0026rsquo;\u0026eacute;poque n\u0026rsquo;\u0026eacute;tait gu\u0026egrave;re propice au sens o\u0026ugrave; les galeries et les mus\u0026eacute;es ne pr\u0026eacute;sentaient que tr\u0026egrave;s peu ou plus du tout d\u0026rsquo;expositions de peintures. Minimalisme, arte povera, art conceptuel, art vid\u0026eacute;o naissant, happenings et performances \u0026eacute;taient dans le vent\u0026nbsp;: Broodthaers, Beuys et Byars donnaient le la pour ainsi dire.
