This is where we come across one of the Pacific Rim’s busiest ports, the cradle of Greenpeace and host city of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, recently hailed as one of the “greatest cities on earth”: Vancouver.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn spite of – or exactly because of – its spectacular isolation far away from the established power centres of the international art world, Vancouver has, in recent decades, grown into a major hub on the contemporary arts circuit. Ian Wallace, Jeff Wall, Ken Lum, Rodney Graham and Stan Douglas are among the city’s best-known artists; their work shares a remarkable string of commonalities that, inevitably, reveal the import of the ‘local’ within the ‘global’ economy of art. One such a recurrent motif – equally important in the work of younger artists such as Brian Jungen and Scott McFarland – concerns the dialectic of B.C.’s sublime scenic beauty vis-à-vis the drab reality of everyday life in a postmodern ‘frontier’ metropolis.\u003cbr\u003eM HKA’s winter exhibition “Intertidal” – a reference to the Pacific Northwestern coast’s striking tidal rhythms – seeks to address the many paradoxes and complexities that define the riches of Vancouver’s art ‘scene’. Hier situeert zich één van ’s werelds drukste havens, de bakermat van Greenpeace, de stad met de hoogste levenskwaliteit ter wereld: Vancouver.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eParadoxaal genoeg staat deze bij uitstek ‘nieuwe’ stad al decennia lang wereldwijd bekend als de thuishaven van een gerenommeerde kunstscène. Kunstenaars als Ian Wallace, Jeff Wall, Ken Lum, Rodney Graham en Stan Douglas wonen en werken in Vancouver. In hun werk hanteren ze vaak gemeenschappelijke, door hun 'lokale' context gekleurde thematieken. Een vaak terugkerend motief in hun oeuvres – maar ook in dat van in Europa minder bekende namen als Rebecca Belmore, Brian Jungen en Scott McFarland – is het spanningsveld tussen het landschapsschoon van “Supernatural British Columbia” en de realiteit van het dagelijkse leven in een postmoderne frontier-metropool.\u003cbr\u003eVoldoende aanleiding voor het M HKA om deze inspirerende scène tot onderwerp van zijn wintertentoonstelling te maken. De titel “INTERTIDAL” – een verwijzing naar het niemandsland dat elke dag door het spectaculaire getijdenverschil droog komt te liggen – is een metafoor voor de vele dualismen die de kunstproductie in Vancouver karakteriseren. Loin des temples traditionnels de l’art contemporain, Vancouver jouit depuis plusieurs décennies d’une production artistique contemporaine d’un niveau exceptionnel. Des artistes tels que Ian Wallace, Stan Douglas, Ken Lum, Jeff Wall et Rodney Graham garantissent depuis longtemps à Vancouver son « label » enviable de rigueur conceptuelle.
