In the installation \u003cem\u003eShowfish \u003c/em\u003eVanagt explores her interest in optics, microscopy and the history of the moving image. Vanagt aims to evoke the earliest microscopic images using\u0026nbsp;fish eggs, the whiskers of a cat and a piece of coper paper.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThis INBOX-presentation is part of\u0026nbsp; \u003ca href=\"http://a-million-pictures.wp.hum.uu.nl/\"\u003eA Million Pictures\u003c/a\u003e, a European research project looking into the magical lantern as cultural heritage. \u003ca href=\"http://www.visualpoetics.be\"\u003eVisual Poetics\u003c/a\u003e, the research group\u0026nbsp;connected to the University of Antwerp invited Vanagt to create new artistic work using the lanterns of the Vrielynck collection as a starting point.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe Vrielynck collection, which has been in the care of M HKA since 2003,\u0026nbsp;consists of antique cameras, projectors, optical toys. Between 2011 and 2013 the collection served as a source for research for a number of exhibitions curated by Edwin Carels. The Lanterna Magica or Magic Lantern was the most popular visual technology of the nineteenth century. This invention allowed transparent images on glass plates\u0026nbsp;to be projected on the walls of theatres, schools and in a home environment. Travelling showmen with lanterns on their backs would also entertain audiences with lantern displays at carnivals.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe workshop brings curators, researchers, artists and collectors from all over Europe together to consider the manner in which the magic lantern can be reinstated as cultural heritage. Maar ook rondtrekkende showmannen met lantaarns op hun rug gaven publieke lantaarnvertoningen op kermissen.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eDe workshop brengt curatoren, onderzoekers, kunstenaars en verzamelaars uit heel Europa samen rond de vraag op welke manier de toverlantaarn als cultureel erfgoed vandaag opnieuw tot leven gebracht kan worden.
