We start off with the work of artist Alain Arias-Misson.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMy new flat work I call ‘meta-concretism’ to mark its boundaries between ‘concrete poetry’ and ‘visual poetry’. I practiced a concretist, then a visual poetics for many years – in the latter there is a dialectic of printed or handwritten words – and fragmentary images. This form has become very common today, dozens of magazines and books and galleries show it. My sense is that the trend has become a ‘potpourri’, a stew into which anything is dumped. Painters, poets, graphic artists, cartoonists, publicists mixt text and image, now hundreds do this with digital media, and it has lost its ‘edge’, its identity. It has become boring.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe beauty of concrete poetry and the early visual poetry such as Apollinaire and Laurence Sterne, was that it derived from an authentic poetic intuition. Only poets did it. That is why I have returned to the rigor of Concrete Poetry, with a primary focus on the material presence of letters and eventually words, and techniques of combination and permutation of letters - \u0026nbsp;performed through the agency of the subordinate image; in the case of my own form: meta-concretism. We bijten de spits af met het werk van Alain Arias-Misson.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIk noem mijn nieuw tweedimensionaal werk ‘meta-concretisme’ om het te onderscheiden van ‘concrete poëzie’ en ‘visuele poëzie’. Ik maakte vele jaren concrete en dan visuele poëzie – in deze laatste ontstaat een dialectiek tussen gedrukte of handgeschreven woorden en fragmentarische beelden. Dat is vandaag heel gebruikelijk geworden, tientallen tijdschriften en boeken en galeries maken er gebruik van. Volgens mij is deze trend een ‘potpourri’ geworden, een reservoir waarin alles wordt gedumpt. Schilders, dichters, grafische kunstenaars, cartoonisten, reclamemakers vermengen tekst en beeld en nu doen ze dat vooral met digitale media en heeft deze poëtische vorm zijn ‘scherpte’, zijn identiteit verloren. Het is saai geworden.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDe schoonheid van concrete poëzie en de vroege visuele poëzie, zoals die van Apollinaire en Laurence Sterne, berust in het feit dat ze ontstonden uit een authentieke poëtische intuïtie. Alleen dichters maakten dat. Daarom ben ik teruggekeerd naar de accuratesse van concrete poëzie – met vooral de nadruk op de materiële aanwezigheid van letters en eventueel woorden, en combinatietechnieken en permutatie van letters – die vorm krijgt door de werking van het ondergeschikte beeld. Bij mij resulteert dat in: meta-concretisme.
