An artist with a background in architecture as well as music, Erek has often worked site-specifically in non-art spaces as part of his natural territory. His installation series \u003cem\u003eRoom of Rhythms \u003c/em\u003ewhich began in 2012 for Documenta 13 in a disused department store being a key example, followed more recently by his major project \u003cem\u003e\u0026Ccedil;\u003c/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eIN\u003c/em\u003e for the Pavilion of Turkey at the Venice Biennale in 2017. For his exhibition at M HKA, Erek has developed an experimental project that takes the core facets of his practice into a new material investigation.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eAlong with numerous site visits to Antwerp, Erek has also traced back impressions and experiments from a month\u0026rsquo;s work period in the city in 2009. At the heart of the\u0026nbsp; installation is a new typographical work the artist has created, formed through translating the geometric grammar of the fa\u0026ccedil;ades of terraced homes found in the city that resemble the letter \u0026ldquo;A\u0026rdquo;, into something we read as language. As well as inspiring the title of the exhibition \u0026ndash;\u0026nbsp;\u003cem\u003eAAAAA\u003c/em\u003e \u0026ndash; these fa\u0026ccedil;ades are presented as life-size graphic paintings on the walls of the gallery. These letters resemble the comic-book style for the visualisation of sounds, as if they are coming from the city and into the museum via the window.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eErek is interested in the relations between the spaces inside and outside the museum, also looking at the presence of \u0026ldquo;street furniture\u0026rdquo; \u0026ndash; barriers, bollards and advertisement boards \u0026ndash; in the street just beyond the exhibition space. The project brings such functional \u0026ldquo;readymade\u0026rdquo; items into a formation within the exhibition space that mirrors literally that of the outside. The exhibition seeks to raise questions about the role of objects in human mediation, contrasting the mode used by one public infrastructure \u0026ndash; the municipal mediation of the street \u0026ndash; and that of another \u0026ndash; the psychologically mediated \u0026lsquo;attention economy\u0026rsquo; of the museum. The outer world of the street and the inner world of the exhibition space have an uncanny relationship, where the logic of objects in one space become alien in the other.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe exhibition includes two toy-like sculptural archetypes based on the classic form of a van. De kern van zijn installatie is een nieuw typografisch werk, gevormd door de vertaling van de geometrische grammatica van stadsgevels \u0026ndash; die op de letter \u0026lsquo;A\u0026rsquo; lijken \u0026ndash; naar iets dat we kunnen lezen als taal. Deze gevels doen niet enkel dienst als titel van de tentoonstelling \u0026ndash; \u003cem\u003eAAAAA \u003c/em\u003e\u0026ndash; het zijn ook levensgrote grafische schilderingen op de muren van de tentoonstellingsruimte.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eErek is ge\u0026iuml;nteresseerd in de relaties tussen de ruimtes binnen en buiten het museum, daarbij ook kijkend naar de aanwezigheid van \u0026ldquo;straatmeubilair\u0026rdquo; \u0026ndash; versperringen, palen en borden \u0026ndash; in de straat net achter de tentoonstellingsruimte. Zijn project brengt zulke functionele \u0026ldquo;readymade\u0026rdquo; items in een formatie in de tentoonstellingsruimte die letterlijk de buitenruimte spiegelt. De tentoonstelling bevraagt de rol van objecten in de menselijke omgang. Erek onderzoekt daarbij hoe de ene manier \u0026ndash; de stedelijke bemiddeling van de straat \u0026ndash; zich verhoudt tot de andere \u0026ndash; de psychologische bemiddeling van de \u0026ldquo;aandachtseconomie\u0026rdquo; van het museum.
