The time is long gone when we only found paintings, drawings, graphics and sculptures in art. However, it is difficult to get an impression just how varied the practice of art is nowadays. Therefore, since 2003, the M HKA has been devoting its large summer exhibition to a particular form in contemporary art – an art form that is less well known, but therefore not less important. In 2003 the multiple came to the fore, in 2004 the artist's book was in the spotlight and this summer it is the turn of the ensemble.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat is an ensemble? By definition, an ensemble consists of various elements. The elements belong together, but in a flexible way. For example, think of a woman's ensemble in which the various items of clothing can be worn together, but they can also be combined with others; or of a music ensemble in which different musicians play together but in which the individual members can also vary.\u0026nbsp;\u003cbr\u003eIn the last few years, in the visual arts too we see more and more ensembles emerging: the artist brings various elements ensemble (together). These elements exhibit mutual connection, but the relationships can change. Unlike an installation, which also involves several elements together forming an entity, the ensemble is a dynamic art form. With an installation, the parts are 'installed' and the place they take up in the whole is fixed. At each consecutive presentation the installation will look the same. With an ensemble, the parts are brought together and their place varies according to the presentation, so that an ensemble can look and mean something different every time.\u0026nbsp;\u003cbr\u003eThe ensemble is an attractive form for contemporary artists: thoughts, images, activities and meanings can be associated, so that they transcend themselves. They retain their independence in the whole, but by bringing them together the artist gives the viewer the opportunity to 'read between the lines'. With an ensemble, the viewer can follow how the artist works and associates: by having works of art form a relationship, much becomes clear on the links and processes that are involved in an artist's oeuvre. Juist hoe gevarieerd de kunstpraktijk vandaag is, daar krijgen we echter moeilijk een beeld van. Sinds 2003 wijdt het M HKA daarom zijn grote zomertentoonstelling aan een bepaalde vorm in de hedendaagse kunst – een kunstvorm die minder bekend is, maar daarom niet minder belangrijk. Een ensemble bestaat per definitie uit verschillende elementen. Die elementen horen bij elkaar, maar op een flexibele manier. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een damesensemble waarbij de verschillende kledingsstukken samen kunnen worden gedragen, maar ook met andere kunnen worden gecombineerd of aan een muziekensemble waarin de verschillende muzikanten samen spelen, maar waar de bezetting evengoed kan variëren.\u0026nbsp;\u003cbr\u003eOok binnen de beeldende kunst zien we de laatste jaren meer en meer ensembles opduiken: de kunstenaar brengt verschillende elementen ensemble, samen. Die elementen vertonen een onderlinge samenhang, maar de relaties kunnen wisselen. In tegenstelling tot de installatie, waar ook sprake is van verschillende elementen die samen een geheel vormen, is het ensemble een dynamische kunstvorm. In een installatie zijn de delen ‘geïnstalleerd’, de plaats die ze in het geheel innemen is gefixeerd. Bij elke volgende presentatie zal de installatie er hetzelfde uitzien. In een ensemble worden de delen samengebracht, hun plaats varieert al naargelang de presentatie, waardoor een ensemble telkens andere verschijningsvormen en betekenissen kan hebben.\u003cbr\u003eHet ensemble is een aantrekkelijke vorm voor hedendaagse kunstenaars: gedachten, beelden, activiteiten en betekenissen kunnen worden gekoppeld waardoor ze zichzelf overstijgen. Ze behouden hun onafhankelijkheid in het geheel, maar door ze samen te brengen geeft de kunstenaar de toeschouwer de kans om ‘tussen de lijntjes te lezen’. De toeschouwer kan in het ensemble volgen hoe de kunstenaar werkt en associeert: door kunstwerken samen een relatie te laten aangaan, wordt veel duidelijk over de verbanden en processen die in het oeuvre van een kunstenaar een rol spelen. Le temps où l’on ne rencontrait dans les arts plastiques que peinture, dessin, graphisme et sculpture est depuis longtemps révolu. Il est néanmoins difficile d’avoir une idée précise de l’immense gamme que recouvre la pratique artistique actuelle. C’est pourquoi, en 2003, le MuKHA a décidé de consacrer dorénavant chacune de ses expositions d’été à une expression particulière de l’art contemporain – moins connue mais non moins importante pour autant. En 2003, c’était au multiple d’être à l’ordre du jour, en 2004 au livre d’art et cet été sera consacré à l’ensemble.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eQu’entend-on par ensemble ? Un ensemble se compose par définition d’éléments divers. Ces éléments forment un tout, mais avec flexibilité. Prenons par exemple une tenue féminine, dont les pièces peuvent se porter ensemble, mais également en combinaison avec d’autres, ou un ensemble musical dans lequel les différents musiciens jouent de concert, mais dont la distribution peut tout aussi bien varier. Ces derniers temps, on voit émerger de plus en plus d’ensembles dans l’univers des arts plastiques : l’artiste réunit plusieurs éléments qui présentent une cohérence interne, mais leurs relations peuvent alterner. Contrairement à l’installation, où il est également question de divers éléments formant une entité, l’ensemble est une forme d’art dynamique. Dans une installation, les composantes sont ‘installées’, l’emplacement qu’elles occupent dans l’entité est déterminé. À chaque exposition, la présentation de l’installation sera identique. Or, l’emplacement des composantes réunies dans un ensemble étant variable en fonction de sa présentation, il peut à chaque fois se manifester sous d’autres formes et être porteur d’autres significations.\u003cbr\u003eL’ensemble est une forme artistique attrayante pour les plasticiens contemporains : pensées, images, activités et significations peuvent être reliées, ce qui leur permet de se transcender. Elles préservent leur indépendance au sein d’un tout, mais leur juxtaposition donne au spectateur l’occasion de ‘lire entre les lignes’ et d’appréhender la méthode et les associations dont l’artiste s’est inspiré. Établir une relation entre les œuvres d’art explicite les rapports et les processus qui déterminent la démarche de l’artiste.
