Its starting point is Artefactum magazine, which presented a defining image of the local art of that period, and the project focuses on both the art produced and the art criticism. The purchasing policy pursued by the then newborn M HKA is also examined, revealing that the magazine played an important part in it. Having previously turned the spotlight on the ICC, the museum is hereby once again looking at a period in its own history. The decade from the mid-80s to the mid-90s was one of hope and vigour in the visual arts in Flanders. It was characterised by increasing internationalisation and growing self-confidence, but also by the expanding influence of the market. The market became the main means of gaining interest, and the art of that time was perfectly suited to this. After the explosive painting of Die Neue Wilden and Transavantguardia, this was now the heyday of sculpture, with its vivid, clearly delineated works. Artefactum magazine was a perfect reflection of that period. It was glossy, eager in its international aspirations, and was the first in Belgium to introduce the extravagant adverts that have come to be part of any successful international art periodical. It balanced text with large, attractive illustrations, and its aim was to present the latest art to a broad readership of art-lovers and buyers. De periode van midden jaren 80 tot midden jaren 90 is een decennium van hoop en bloei voor de beeldende kunstscène in Vlaanderen. De periode wordt gekenmerkt door een stijgende internationalisering en een groeiend zelfbewustzijn, maar ook door vermarkting. De markt wordt dè manier om aan belang te winnen, en de kunst van deze tijd leent zich daar uitstekend toe. Na de explosieve schilderkunst van de nieuwe wilden en de transavantguardia, is er nu de sculptuur die hoogtij viert met heldere, afgebakende werken. Artefactum is als tijdschrift een perfecte weerspiegeling van die periode. Artefactum is glossy, heeft een gretige internationale ambitie , en voert voor het eerst in België de overdadige advertenties in die bij het beeld van een succesvol internationaal kunsttijdschrift zijn gaan horen. Het houdt tekst en grote, aantrekkelijke afbeeldingen in evenwicht, en wil het laatste van de kunst brengen voor een breed publiek van kunstliefhebbers en kunstkopers. La période allant du milieu des années 80 au milieu des années 90 est une décennie d’espoir et de croissance pour la scène des arts plastiques en Flandre. Elle est marquée par une internationalisation accrue et une prise de conscience de son potentiel, mais aussi par la marchandisation de l’art. Le marché devient le levier d’influence par excellence et l’art de cette époque s’y prête admirablement. Après l’art pictural explosif des nouveaux fauves et de la transavantguardia, c’est à présent la sculpture qui triomphe avec des œuvres limpides, clairement délimitées. En tant que revue, Artefactum reflète parfaitement son époque. Ce magazine sur papier glacé, débordant d’ambition internationale, introduit pour la première fois en Belgique d’abondantes pages de publicité qui font désormais partie de l’image d’une revue d’art internationale à succès. Elle maintient l’équilibre entre le texte et les images, belles, grandes, attrayantes, et souhaite présenter le dernier cri de la scène artistique à un vaste public d’amateurs d’art et de collectionneurs.
