It embodies the return of contemporary art in Russia, of which the country had once been a beacon. Moscow Conceptualism emancipated art from the social realist tradition which for so long had been the doxa in Russia, making art again autonomous from official society, being both a critique and – still more important – a possible alternative. It proposes a mode of artistic behaviour, both linked to reality and striving to transcend it through radical choices. This return to the real – a microcosm, potentially a macrocosm – can be seen as a return to common sense. Artists in this tradition have the responsibility to further and enhance understanding. This ‘angelic’ moment is till now the defining reference for contemporary art practice in Russia, its ‘second avant-garde’. It is the central strand in the history of Russian contemporary art from the sixties till the late eighties and as such continues to be a ground for artists in Russia up till today. Two years ago the Antwerp M HKA researched the contemporary situation in Russia in cooperation with Viktor Misiano through the project ‘Horizons of Reality’. Now the museum aims at the potential of vision Russia offers on contemporary art with ‘Angels of History’. This exhibition is developed with Joseph Backstein. He was not only director of the first Moscow Biennial for Contemporary Art earlier this year, but he is above all a specialist on Moscow conceptualism and a participant in the movement from its early, underground years onwards. ‘Angels of History’ wants to look back but forward at the same time, to take a wider view. Onder impuls van de kunstenaars van het ‘Moscow Conceptualism’ werd de kunst niet alleen opnieuw een instrument van kritiek, maar bovendien – en belangrijker – een mogelijk alternatief. De Russische kunst kreeg aldus haar autonomie terug. Dit ‘angelieke’ moment – deze tweede avant-garde – is tot op de dag van vandaag een duidelijke referentie voor de hedendaagse kunstpraktijk in Rusland. Meer nog, het fenomeen ‘Moscow Conceptualism’ vormt de rode draad in de geschiedenis van de Russische hedendaagse kunst van de jaren ‘60 tot de late jaren ’80 en blijft tot op heden een leidraad voor Russische kunstenaars. De tentoonstelling ANGELS OF HISTORY biedt een overzicht van deze tweede Russische avant-gardegolf. Naast een documentaire sectie is de tentoonstelling opgesplitst in drie delen waarbij ze focust op werk van sleutelfiguren uit de verschillende periodes. De tentoonstelling opent met een remake van de cruciale expositie COLLECTIVE ACTIONS die curator Joseph Backstein in 1992 realiseerde. Hierin krijgen we een overzicht van de belangrijkste performances van de groep, waarin ANDREI MONASTYRSKY –spilfiguur van de beweging - een sleutelrol speelde. Het eerste ‘hoofdstuk’ omvat verder werken van de belangrijkste grondleggers van de beweging. Kunstenaars als ERIK BULATOV, VITALY KOMAR \u0026amp; ALEXANDER MELAMID, ILYA \u0026amp; EMILIA KABAKOV, die hun artistieke carrière startten in een compleet informeel klimaat. Van hen worden zowel belangrijke historische werken – zoals vroege, nooit eerder in België getoonde, schilderijen van ILYA KABAKOV – als hedendaags werk getoond. In het tweede deel toont het M HKA werken van de zogenaamde derde en vierde generatie kunstenaars. In deze ‘rubriek’ wordt ruim aandacht besteed aan de figuur van KONSTANTIN ZVEZDOCHOTOV en de groep MUKHOMOR en zullen er ook sleutelwerken te zien zijn van VADIM ZAKHAROV en YURI ALBERT. Verder komt ook het collectief INSPECTION MEDICAL HERMENEUTICS aan bod, alsook een aparte presentatie van werk van een van de stichtende leden van het collectief nl. PAVEL PEPPERSTEIN. Met de hierboven vermelde kunstenaars eindigt het hoofdstuk ‘Moscow Conceptualism’ als dusdanig. Zonder de basis die gelegd werd door deze groepering kunnen we ons echter moeilijk de aanpak voorstellen van de kunstenaars actief in de jaren ’90 en tot op heden. Het derde ‘hoofdstuk’ belicht dan ook een aantal kunstenaars uit de jaren ‘90: VLADIMIR DUBOSSARSKY en ALEXANDER VINOGRADOV, OLEG KULIK, VLAD MONROE en ANATOLY OSMOLOVSKY, die met hun attitude en artistieke strategieën een link leggen tussen dit tijdvak en eerdere periodes. Ainsi l’art russe a réconquéri son autonomie. Le moment ‘angélique’ – cette deuxième avant-garde – est aujourd’hui encore une référence manifeste pour l’art contemporain en Russie. Mieux encore, le phénomène du ‘conceptualisme moscovite’ forme un fil rouge à travers l’histoire de l’art contemporaine russe des années 80, et demeure en tant que tel, à ce jour, un fil conducteur pour les artistes russes. L’exposition ‘Angels of History’ donne un aperçu de cette deuxième vague d’avant-garde russe. En plus d’une section documentaire l’exposition est divisée en trois parties tout en accentuant l’œuvre de personnages clefs des différentes périodes. L’exposition commence avec un remake de L’exposition cruciale « Collective Actions » que le commissaire d’exposition Joseph Backstein a réalisé en 1992. Ici nous recevons un aperçu des performances les plus importantes du groupe où Andrei Monastyrsky - le personnage pivot du mouvement - jouait un rôle clef. Le premier ‘chapitre’ (FOUNDERS) contient des oeuvres des initiateurs les plus importants du mouvement :il s’agit d’artistes comme Erik Bulatov, Vitaly Komar \u0026amp; Alexander Melamid, Ilya \u0026amp; Emilia Kabakov, dont la carrière artistique a débuté dans un climat tout à fait informel. L’exposition présente des oeuvres historiques comme des tableaux de début de la carrière d’Ilya Kabakov qui n’ont jamais été montrées en Belgique, aussi bien que des oeuvres récentes. Dans la deuxième partie (CONTINUATIONS) le M HKA montre des œuvres de la soi-disant ‘troisième’ et ‘quatrième’ génération d‘artistes. Cette ‘rubrique’ prêtera beaucoup d’attention à l’artiste Konstantin Zvezochotov et le groupe Muhkhomor, tandis que vous pouvez aussi voir des œuvres clefs de Vadim Zakharov et Yuri Albert. Il y a encore le collectif « Inspection Medical Hermeneutics » et une présentation séparée de l’oeuvre d’un des membres fondateurs du collectif c.à.d. Pavel Pepperstein. Beaucoup d’attention sera prêté au personnage de Konstantin Zvezochotov et le groupe Muhkomor qui ont annoncé un retournement. Avec les artistes mentionnés ci-dessus, le chapitre ‘Moscow Conceptualism’ se termine tel quel. Sans la base établie par ce groupement, il serait difficile de s’imaginer l’approche des artistes actifs dans les années nonante et jusqu’à maintenant. Le troisième ‘chapitre’ (DEVELOPMENTS) pose le regard sur un nombre d’artistes des années nonante: Vladimir Dubossarsky et Alexander Vinogradov, Oleg Kulik, Vlad Monroe et Anatoly Osmolovsky, qui par leur attitude et stratégies artistiques font le lien entre cette période-ci et des périodes antérieures.
