Ensemble: Jim Shaw - Study Drawings
Bien qu’au cours les années 1970, lorsque Jim Shaw étudiait au California Institute of the Arts (CIA), l’accent fût principalement mis sur l’art non figuratif et conceptuel, dans sa pratique artistique, le dessin occupe néanmoins une place prépondérante. En véritable homme de métier, il maîtrise le dessin à partir d’observation ou de matériel photographique. Pour la série Dream Drawings en revanche, Shaw dessine ce qui traverse son imaginaire de manière rapide et directe sur le papier. Au cœur de l’exposition, il nous présente une sélection de plus de cent dessins d’atelier qu’il a réalisés au cours de la dernière décennie. Mêlant études préliminaires détaillées pour des tableaux et idées croquées sur le vif, ce panorama offre un aperçu intime du processus créatif et conceptuel de Shaw et esquisse pour ainsi dire son paysage mental des dix dernières années. Avec un mélange d’images reconnaissables et absurdes, il sonde la culture et la politique des États-Unis et nous révèle plus que jamais la friction croissante entre les cadres de pensée conservateurs et progressistes.
