Die gaan van schilderijen (zowel figuratief als abstract) over opera (componist, librettist, decorontwerper), tot concrete poëzie en decoratieve vormen van tekst, beeldhouwwerk en plaatsgebonden ontwerp (mozaïeken, wandtapijten, draadmodelobjecten). \r\nHij heeft ook al verschillende meta-artistieke rollen op zich genomen: criticus, curator, voorzitter van een committee voor de Royal Academy, vertaler – en al die rollen komen terug in zijn kunst terecht. \r\nPhillips heeft een passie voor postkaarten, maar is bovendien een nijver student en verzamelaar van Afrikaanse kunst sinds zijn eerste bezoek aan het continent in 1973. In 1995 stelde hij een grote tentoonstelling samen in de Royal Academy en het Guggenheim Museum: *Africa: The Art of a Continent*. Phillips ontving de Frances Williams Memorial Prize in 1983 voor zijn illustraties bij en vertaling van *De hel* van Dante, waar hij overigens ook een tv-versie van maakte met Peter Greenaway (die hen beiden gezamenlijk de Italiaprijs opleverde). Hij is ook trustee geweest aan de National Portrait Gallery en het British Museum.
